K A Gunasekaran - Playwright, university teacher dies in Pondy
PUDUCHERRY: Folk artist and former professor and reader (drama and theatre arts) of Pondicherry University, K A Gunasek aran, 60, died after a brief illness at his residence in Puducherry on Sunday . A diabetic patient, Gunasekaran recently underwent a kidney transplant. He was not keeping well after the surgery , family sources said.
Inspired by Left movements, Gunasekaran started penning small poems and plays. His works were essentially laced with Marxian ideology . After Mandal Commission submitted its report, he started focusing on the dalit point of view, ideology and theatre.
His first play , (Baliyaadgal) was performed in 1981. An actor who worked both in theatre and cinema, Gunasekaran lent his voice to a number of films.
He wrote several plays, the popular ones being Sathiya Sothanai (experiments with truth, 1988) and Pavalakkodi Alathu Kudumba valakku (family dispute, 2001). He had published more than two dozen books on folk arts, modern theatre history , and music. He is survived by wife and two Amma's Children
